Why I Volunteer

Every other Wednesday, I wake up bright and early to cook and serve a hot breakfast at the Family Emergency Shelter in Louisville. I’m joined regularly by friends, fellow members of my church, and business associates. We’ve done theme breakfasts for Independence Day and the first day of school, but we always prepare the full fixings of a home-cooked breakfast. By making it fun, we get a lot of smiles from the families as they move through the line and when we visit their tables to chat for a moment.

I’ll admit, some mornings I’d rather not go out before the sun rises. Then I think about how fortunate I am to have a bed of my own in a comfortable home. The residents of the shelter don’t have that luxury at the moment. And they would have had a simple, cold breakfast if not for our small but mighty group. My fellow volunteers and I are convinced that we get more out of this experience than we give!
